Ryan Condal, the show's co-creator and showrunner, confirmed that the ongoing GoT prequel will have a total of four seasons only.

HBO’s popular Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon will wrap up with its fourth season. During a press conference on Monday about the season 2 finale, Ryan Condal, the show’s co-creator and showrunner, confirmed that the ongoing GoT prequel will have a total of four seasons only. Condal also mentioned that the writing for season 3 is already underway and the team will start its production in early 2025. Season 2 of the show that has just aired the finale had eight episodes in total. Condal has also revealed that he is still to have a discussion with HBO about the number of episodes in the next season. “I would just anticipate the cadence of the show, from a dramatic storytelling perspective, will continue to be the same from Season 2 on,” he revealed.

George R.R. Martin, the author of A Song of Ice and Fire and the co-creator of the series, had previously written on his blog that four seasons, each with ten episodes, would be needed to fully cover the Dance of the Dragons storyline from his book Fire & Blood. However, HBO had not confirmed the total number of seasons for the show until now, reports Variety.

Condal also addressed the fans’ concern regarding the finale of the recently concluded season 2 of the House of the Dragon. He explained that the team aimed to build anticipation for the Battle of the Gullet event and hence it wasn’t included in Season 2’s finale.

“I know everybody wants this to come out every summer. It’s just that the show is so complex that we’re really making multiple feature films every season. So I apologise for the wait, but I will just say if Rook’s Rest and the Red Sowing are any indications, we’re gonna pull off a hell of a win with the Battle of the Gullet in the future,” he told Variety.

Condal avoided revealing too much, saying that more details of the upcoming series will be addressed in Season 3. He added, “We were delighted to have Rhys reenter the story, and I will just say that the Otto Hightower tale has not yet come to an end.”

The original Game of Thrones series, which is based on Martin’s still-unfinished A Song of Ice and Fire novels, aired for eight seasons between 2011 and 2019. Ongoing drama, House of the Dragon started streaming in August 2022 and is based on the author’s 2018 book Fire & Blood.

HBO is currently working on another prequel spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, set 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
