Less than two months after its release, Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies has surpassed Ranbir Kapoor starrer Animal in terms of viewership. Laapataa Ladies was released on Netflix in March this year whereas Animal saw its OTT release on the same platform on January 26, 2024.
As reported by Binged, Laapataa Ladies took over Animal on Netflix with 13.8 million views. However, it has not yet surpassed Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter which has 14 million views.
A Reddit user also shared the news of Laapataa Ladies beating Animal on OTT and urged all to watch the Kiran Rao directorial. “Its become very popular in the UK. All my local friends loved it. They have only watched movies like Bahubali. So proud when they talk about Laapata ladies,” one of the users wrote. “That’s good. This movie deserves all the attention,” added another.
Released on March 1, Laapataa Ladies is produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande. The film is adapted from Biplab Goswami’s award-winning novel. Kiran Rao’s directorial features Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel, and Ravi Kishan in the lead roles. The movie takes viewers back to rural India in 2001. It revolves around two brides who get exchanged during a train journey. The journey filled with twists and turns begins as their husbands start searching for the real bride.
Interestingly, the news of Laapataa Ladies surpassing Animal also comes weeks after the verbal battle between Kiran Rao and Animal director Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Earlier this year, Kiran was speaking to The Quint when she denied commenting on Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s films and revealed that she has never really watched his movies.
“I have never commented on Mr Sandeep’s films because I have never seen them. I have often spoken on misogyny and the representation of women on screen. I have talked about it on various platforms at various times. But I have never taken the name of any film because it is not about the specific film. Why Mr Vanga has assumed that I was talking about his film you’ll have to ask him. I have never seen his film,” she said.
Later, Vanga also reacted to Kiran’s criticism while speaking to Dainik Bhaskar. He lashed out at Rao and argued that she did not know the difference between stalking and approaching. “My AD showed me an article. It is of the second ex-wife of a superstar. She is saying that films like Bahubaali 2 and Kabir Singh promote misogyny and stalking. I think she does not know the difference between stalking and approaching. When people read these things out of context, they tend to agree. This is entirely wrong,” he said.
