The Malayalam film A Film By, directed by debut filmmaker Sabareesh Unnikrishnan Vijayalakshmi, has grabbed headlines with its unique setting, as the entire movie was shot in Canada. Produced by Ranju Kosi under the Magic Mist Media banner, the film showcases a cast of newcomers and has been released on OTT platforms by the same company. Akshay Monsi serves as the cinematographer, adding to the film’s distinctive visual appeal.

The film is co-produced by Thomson Live Emigration, Sarath Prasad, and Aswathi Neelmana, with Akhildas Pradeep Kumar serving as the Canadian sponsor.

The main cast includes Sanjay Ajit John, Subhiksha Sampathkumar, Srikanth Siva, Jitin Philip Jose, Rhea Benny, Gurmeet Bajwa, Ribin Alukal, Bineesh Chacko, Nandamohan Jayakumar, Mandeep Singh Bajwa, Arni Muras, Henry Tarakan, and Anstle Anto.

Shivakumaran K is the executive producer, and the editing is done by Francis Lewis, known for Cathal the Core and Great Indian Kitchen. The film’s lyrics, written by the director, have been performed by Anupama Sridevi and Srikanth Asokan.

Besides, the Malayalam film Vadakkan, headlined by Kishore Kumar G and Shruthy Menon, has scripted history. It won the Best Supernatural Thriller Award at this year’s Fright Night Film Fest held on September 28. This accomplishment makes it the first Malayalam film to receive such an accolade. Sajeed A directed this film, while Unni R, popular for his works Munnariyippu (2014) and Charlie (2015) penned it. Vadakkan stars an ensemble star cast of actors Merin Philip, Meenakshi Unnikrishnan, and Aryan Katuria.

Vadakkan was shown at the Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film Fantastic Pavilion. Produced by Offbeat Studios, this film was selected as one of the seven special screenings at the Fright Night Film Fest event. Sound designer Resul Pookutty, cinematographer Keiko Nakahara, and composer and singer Bijibal attended the screening.

Vadakkan was also screened alongside other six films at the Cannes Film Festival’s Marché du Film Fantastic Pavilion. It introduces the directors to different film genres. Pablo Guisa, who manages the Fantastic Pavilion at Cannes Marché du Film, said at the screening, “We’re really happy to show Vadakkan as one of our top screenings. The movie is a mixture of mystery, old stories, and supernatural elements on a global scale. Vadakkan tells a gripping story in its style. The film shares how strong Indian cinema is in the global genre scene.”
