Preeti Jain-Madhur Bhandarkar Case: What Was It All About
The model-turned-actress lodged a complaint in magistrate's court in 2004 after Maharashtra Police filed closure reports after investigation into the allegation of rape.

New Delhi: Mumbai-based model Preeti Jain was on Friday sentenced to three years in jail for plotting to kill filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, against whom she had filed a rape case in 2004.

The model-turned-actress, who has worked in small budget films, lodged a complaint in 2004 after Maharashtra Police filed closure reports following investigation into the allegation of rape. She alleged that the national award-winning filmmaker had raped her several times between 1999 and 2004 on the pretext of marrying her and casting her in his films.

In September 2011, a Mumbai metropolitan court directed the Page 3 and Fashion director to face trial in the case. Two months later, the director was granted anticipatory bail.

The apex court bench of Justice HL Dattu and Justice CK Prasad quashed the charges in 2012 after it was reported that the actress was no longer interested in pursuing the matter.

In September 2005, almost a year after she filed the rape complaint, Jain reportedly gave the “contract” to kill Bhandarkar to gangster Arun Gawli's aide Naresh Pardeshi.

When Pardeshi failed in doing her bidding, she demanded her money back. The matter reached Gawli whose men promptly alerted the police.

A case was registered on September 10, 2005 and Pardeshi was arrested the same day. Jain was picked up while she was on her way to the Versova police station.

On Friday, a Sessions Court in Mumbai held Jain guilty of conspiring to kill Bhandarkar and sentenced her to three years in jail.
