In the absence of a strong lineup of new film releases, cinemas across the country have embraced the growing trend of re-releases, offering audiences a chance to revisit classic films on the big screen. One such film, Veer Zaara—starring Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, and Preity Zinta—was re-released on September 13, 2023, joining the wave of nostalgia-driven cinema experiences.
In its first week of re-release, Veer Zaara managed to collect Rs 1.57 crore nett, bringing its lifetime box office tally to Rs 100 crore worldwide, including earnings from its original 2004 run. The film was showcased on 282 screens, opening to Rs 20 lakh on Friday and gradually gaining momentum over the weekend with Rs 32 lakh on Saturday and Rs 38 lakh on Sunday. Despite the weekdays seeing a dip in collections, with Rs 20 lakh on Monday and progressively lower figures for the rest of the week, the overall performance added a fresh chapter to the film’s long-standing success.
The film originally grossed Rs 98 crore during its first run in 2004 and saw a minor re-release in February 2023 for Valentine’s Week, adding Rs 30 lakh gross to its total. Its recent re-release has boosted its lifetime gross earnings to Rs 102.60 crore worldwide.
Directed by Yash Chopra and written by Aditya Chopra, Veer Zaara is widely regarded as a beloved romantic saga. Its return to the big screen has reignited fond memories for fans while also introducing the film to a new generation of viewers.
Veer Zaara is a timeless love story that transcends borders, cultural divides, and decades. The film follows Veer Pratap Singh (Shah Rukh Khan), an Indian Air Force officer, and Zaara Hayaat Khan (Preity Zinta), a Pakistani woman from an influential family. Their fates intertwine when Veer rescues Zaara during a trip to India, sparking a deep connection between the two. However, political and societal pressures force them apart. Years later, a young Pakistani lawyer, Saamiya Siddiqui (Rani Mukerji), takes on Veer’s case, uncovering the truth about his enduring love for Zaara.
The trend of re-releases has been further buoyed by the success of other films, such as Tumbbad, which was re-released alongside Veer Zaara. The folklore horror drama, originally released in 2018, has earned Rs 13.15 crore in its re-release, edging close to surpassing its original collection of Rs 13.50 crore. Other films like Rockstar and Laila Majnu have also seen a revival at the box office through re-releases, highlighting the growing appeal of revisiting modern classics in cinemas.
