Showtime Review: Emraan Hashmi and Mahima Makwana Hold The Spotlight in This Lukewarm Series
Showtime tries to explore life of Bollywood film producers but fails to impress with its execution.

When the trailer of Showtime was released with a grand event in Mumbai, it looked ignited everyone’s interest. With a wide cast ranging from Emraan Hashmi to Mahima Makwana, Mouni Roy and Shriya Saran among others; Karan Johar backed series looked like it was going to bring something new and refreshing on the table. However, Showtime doesn’t live up to the expectations.

For the unversed, Showtime delves into Bollywood and revolves around the life of two people – Raghu Khanna (played by Emraan Hashmi) and Mahika Nandi (essayed by Mahima Makwana). The show brings (or atleast tries to bring) several aspects of Bollywood to the forefront.

The series looks very less convincing. Overnight, Mahika becomes from a commoner to the CEO of the country’s largest production house as she also learns about her mother’s roots. It is like, Karan Johar suddenly declaring me as the heir of his Dharma Productions. Wondering how’s that even possible? Exactly what I thought while watching Showtime.

Even when the show was establishing such a crucial storyline for the events to follow, it doesn’t let you to invest in the characters and subplots. It feels like it is all done in haste with very little attention to detail. The fault lies with the storyline and the direction. In the efforts to show that good scripts are a must for movie making, the makers fail to work upon their own script.

Showtime also disappoints you when it comes to the background music. Again, the music doesn’t stand out. As a result, it doesn’t linger around after the series comes to an end.

Having said that, one thing which is intentionally layered into the show and must be appreciated are the little mentions of general public’s perception about Bollywood. It talks about nepotism, argues if the South Cinema is doing better than Bollywood, questions if scripts and not superstars should be prioritised.

What saves the show are the performances by Emraan Hashmi and Mahima Makwana. The former is brilliant as always. He adds a layer of fun to his intense character and impresses all. Emraan plays the role of Raghu Khanna with easy and perfection and is surely a delight to watch.

On the other hand, Mahima Makwana brings simplicity to her character. Her performance looks very natural and is a testament of her journey from television to cinema and now OTT. Rajeev Khandelwal plays the role of an actor is Showtime and brings something new to his fans. He is smart, cunning and witty. If you are tired of watching Rajeev in his intense avatar, his performance in Showtime will impress you.

Mouni Roy might disappoint you a little because of course, we expect more from her. Unfortunately, she has been reduced to a glam prop in the initial episodes. On the other hand, Shriya Saran gets limited screentime.

Overall, Showtime is a decent watch but do not expect it to blow your mind.
