Actor Vijay Varma, celebrated for his roles in Pink, Mirzapur, and Gully Boy, is gearing up for his next big project, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. In a recent interview with Shubhankar Mishra on YouTube, Vijay candidly discussed a challenging period in his life when he faced significant financial and personal difficulties.
Vijay revealed that during one of his lowest phases, he had only Rs 18 in his bank account. Reflecting on this difficult time, he shared that his options for a meal were limited to either panipuri for Rs 12 or idli for Rs 13. This period was particularly tough as Vijay was not on speaking terms with his father and had stopped seeking financial help from his family.
He described this phase as a critical juncture where he felt he had lost everything. An insightful person advised him that until his basic needs were met, he wouldn’t feel the urgency to push himself further. This advice helped him recognise the fire within him and motivated him to persevere despite the hardships.
“Meri baat-cheet ho nahin rahi thi mere pitaji se (I wasn’t on talking terms with my father),” he expressed.
“Aur mujhe kisi samjhdaar aadmi ne bola ki jab tak tera rent aur basic kharcha aata rahega, tu hilega nahin. Tere andar jo fire hai usko thoda jalane de…(An intelligent person had told me that till the time you are getting money for rent and basic expenses, you won’t move. You have a fire inside; let it burn),” he added.
Vijay Varma’s journey from those trying times to now starring in IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is inspiring. In this series, directed by Anubhav Sinha, he portrays Captain Devi Sharan, the pilot of the 1999 hijacked Indian Airlines Flight 814. The series, which also features Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, and Dia Mirza, will premiere on Netflix on August 29, 2024, and delves into the gripping events of the hijacking.
