Jelly Roll offered a heartfelt tribute to TV’s brightest stars who passed away this year with his moving song, I Am Not Okay. Making his debut at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards 2024, the singer took centre stage at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theatre. During his performance, he honoured luminaries such as Bob Newhart, James Earl Jones, Shannen Doherty and Peter Marshall, among others.

Beginning with introducing his song, Beautifully Broken Single, which has already peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, he went on to describe music as “therapeutic.”

“I believe that music can heal. I also believe that storytelling is just as cathartic. I hope that this song can act as a healing moment for those mourning the storytellers we have lost this year. If you are feeling lost or alone tonight, I want you to know that it’s okay to not always be okay,” Jelly Roll told the audience. The 39-year-old musician chose an all-black suit as he took centre stage for the special performance.

As he sang along, a string section of famous names and faces behind continued adding to the emotional moment. Some of them included the likes of Bob Newhart, Shannen Doherty, Peter Marshall, Richard Simmons, Martin Mull, Carl Weathers, Richard Lewis, Donald Sutherland and James Earl Jones, who recently passed away at the age of 93.

Bob Newhart, whose image remained on the screen for a longer tribute, also received a tribute from Jimmy Kimmel. Taking to the stage, he said, “And the award for deceased industry professional we will miss the most goes to,” further extending his respects to the late comic actor.

Hosted by Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, the Emmys are currently airing on ABC.

Earlier on the red carpet, the Son of a Sinner singer arrived at the event, where he stood with a bright smile and showed love to fans by posing with hand hearts. “I’m like in a candy store; this is so awesome. I’m having the best night ever already… This is my first Emmy; this is really, really cool,” he told ABC.
