Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba has finally returned for its much-awaited season 4. The new season started with an hour-long episode on May 12. Fans rejoiced over the one-hour time frame, however, this has also led to many speculations about season four’s length. Demon Slayer episodes are usually 20–30 minutes long, except the finale episode in season 3 which was about 70 minutes. The number of episodes for season 4 has not been released. For now, fans can only wait for Sunday, for new episodes to drop. In India, fans can watch the anime on three OTT platforms: Crunchyroll, Netflix and JioCinema.
Other than the hour-long length of the first episode, another factor has given rise to the speculations that this season will be shorter than other seasons. Season 4 will be adapted from the 15th and 16th volumes (chapters 128–136) of the manga, which are about Hashira Training Arc. Many manga fans know that the Hashira Training Arc is very short. In a manga, an arc is a separate segment or off-shoot storyline consisting of many episodes that ultimately add to the larger story.
Season 4 will follow Tanjiro and his allies as they train under the mentorship of Gyomei Himejima and aspire to be a Hashira, the highest rank that Demon Slayers can obtain in the Demon Slayer Corps.
The Hashira Training Arc is arguably the shortest arc from Demon Slayer manga as it only lasts for around 9 chapters. According to Comic Book, the first hour-long episode of season 4 already covered two and a half chapters worth of material. Now many fans are predicting that season 4 might only have five to eight episodes.
It is also interesting to note that the makers of Demon Slayer have progressively reduced the number of episodes with each season. The first season 1 which covered Tanjiro Kamado, Unwavering Resolve Arc, had 26 episodes. Demon Slayer, season 2 which was concerned with the Mugen Train Arc had 18 episodes. Next up, season 3, Swordsmith Village Arc, which was released last year had just 11 episodes.
It will be interesting to see how season 4 proceeds. Demon Slayer anime is based on the manga series of the same name. The manga is written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge. As of February 2021, some estimates say that the Demon Slayer manga had over 150 million copies in circulation (including digital copies). This makes it one of the best-selling manga series of all time.
