Mumbai: Parents Among Three Held For Selling Their Children To Buy Drugs

Three people, including a couple was arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch for allegedly selling children in order to procure money to buy drugs. The couple, parents of two allegedly sold their children in order to arrange money, police said. A month old baby girl was also rescued by the police, whereas the search for the two-year old son is currently underway.

The arrested three people have been identified as Shabbir and Sania Khan and Shakeel Makrani. The Crime Branch also detained a third person named Usha Rathod, who was an alleged agent and took commission from the sale.

In a statement from the Mumbai Crime Branch, Daya Nayak told ANI, “A couple addicted to drugs sold their own two children to raise money in Andheri. As soon as the couple’s family learned about the incident, the story came to light. Police have registered a case against the accused couple and two others. The accused couple sold the boy for sixty thousand rupees and the one-month-old girl for fourteen thousand rupees.”

The statement further said that the couple were unable to stay without drugs and at the same time they got in touch with the accused agent, Rathod. The identity of the couple to whom the two children were sold is yet to be ascertained.

As per the statement, the couple recently had a daughter. “They sold the girl to the accused, Shakeel Makrani, last month for ₹ 14,000”, the Crime Branch added, as quoted by ANI.

A case was registered against Shabbir Khan, his wife Sania, Usha Rathore and Shakeel Makrani. The couple, Shabbir and Sania were alleged drug addicts.

The incident came to light when the accused Shabbir Khan’s sister Rubina Khan got to know about the incident and immediately filed a complaint against her brother and sister-in-law at the D.N. Nagar police station. A case was registered on the basis of her complaint, following which the investigation was handed over to the crime branch.
