Nun 2, the sequel to the 2018 horror film Nun is earning large numbers at the box office. Helmed by Michael Chaves, starring Taissa Farmiga, Bonnie Aarons, Anna Popplewell, and Jonas Bloquet among others, the ninth film of the acclaimed Conjuring franchise seems to have rightfully spooked the audience. Released on the silver screens on September 7, Nun 2 received poor reviews upon its inception. But despite the unfavourable verdict, lovers of the horror series are flocking in large numbers to the theatres. In its opening weekend, the Michael Chaves directorial has surpassed over 30 million dollars in North America.
According to Warner Bros Studio, Nun 2, which was released in 3,728 theaters in North America raked up a sum of 32 million dollars in its first weekend. The film collected 52.7 million internationally, making its global debut to 85.3 million dollars, reports Comscore. Nun 2 even surpassed director Antoine Fuqua’s crime action Equalizer 3, starring Denzel Washington in a titular role. Equalizer 3 amassed 12.1 million dollars on its second weekend, almost 20 million less than Nun 2’s opening box office weekend collection. However, despite getting a good start, Nun 2 failed to succeed its predecessor Nun. The first film in the Nun franchise was a smash hit, opening to 53.8 million dollars, reports Variety.
After toppling Equalizer 3, Nun 2 crossed another much-loved film, titled My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, which was released in North American theatres almost 21 years after the premiere of its first segment. The Nia Vardalos directorial, opened to 10 million dollars, making its place in the third position as compared to Nun 2, reports Variety. The fourth place is occupied by the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan, garnering 6.2 million dollars, followed by the much-hyped film Barbie, starring Margot Robbie which amassed 5.9 million dollars on its opening day.
In an interaction with Entertainment Weekly, Nun 2’s director Michael Chaves revealed “People wanted more violence… So, we did a little bit of additional photography and we ramped that up.” Taissa Farmiga has once again slipped into the shoes of Sister Irene, with Bonnie Aarons breathing life to the character of the demonic spirit Valak. The story is set against the backdrop of 1956 where Sister Irene comes face to face with Valak again. As priests across Europe get murdered by the demonic spirit, it is up to her to find out Valak’s ulterior motive and how to send her back to hell.
