A man from Bihar’s Buxur district was awarded a life term for raping his minor daughters for at least 10 years. In the uncanny incident that has left social scientists alarmed, the father raped his daughters on the advice of a “tantrik” so that he could have a son.
According to a report published in Times of India, the POCSO court on September 12 also awarded life term to the tantrik while handing down a 20-year prison sentence to the mother and aunt of the girls for instigated the men to rape them.
The ToI report stated that the incident came to light after the girls managed to escape from their home and reach a police station, where they filed a formal complaint against their family members. Social scientists quoted in the report expressed their shock and said illiteracy was the root cause behind such incidents.
They further said this was not a case of gender discrimination alone but the outcome of an existing patriarchal system, which will go on until challenged by women themselves.
Police said the father had consulted the tantrik in 2012 as he had two daughters and longed for a son. The tantrik told him to “rape his own daughters”. Soon, a boy was born in the family but the tantrik told the man that there was a threat to his son’s life and he should keep raping the girls to save him from any risk. Later, the tantrik also started raping the girls, police added.
The girls fled their home in May last year and managed to file a police complaint, following which a speedy investigation and trial resulted in the conviction of the accused in the case.
