West Indies great Viv Richards has backed Team India to perform well in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup. Richards recently took part in an ICC event where he showed his support for India while underlining his bond with the country. The legendary batter made his Test debut on Indian soil back in 1974 in Bengaluru. During the conversation, Richards pointed at the craze about cricket among Indian people. According to him, the Indian team will keep the upper hand during the World Cup campaign owing to the massive home support.
“I fancy India, I have a deep affiliation with India, that particular country in itself. I made my debut in India and I have a lot of sentimental reasons about that part of the world. So I will back India to do well, they have massive support you can never forget that when you have massive support it can be seriously encouraging,” Richards said.

Team India, under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, will be desperate to get their hands on the World Cup title this year. It’s been a decade since India won an ICC trophy, it was way back in 2013 when Mahendra Sing Dhoni led the side to a Champions Trophy triumph on English soil. Dhoni was the skipper as well when India last took home the ODI World Cup in 2011 following a thrilling final against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Since 2013, India have reached the knockout stage of several ICC tournaments but failed to secure the silverware. They also featured in the World Test Championship (WTC) final in the last two years but endured defeats on both occasions. Rohit Sharma and Co will hope to turn the table around this time and engrave their name on the World Cup trophy for the third time in history.
The Indian team is currently in Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup and already reached final of the tournament. The Men in Blue have been showing off their dominance in the continental tournament. They came out of the group stage after finishing second in Group A.
India appeared more dangerous in the Super 4 round. They first picked up a remarkable 228-run win over Pakistan before beating Sri Lanka by 41 runs in a low-scoring encounter. India are slated to clash against reigning champions Sri Lanka in the final of the Asia Cup on September 17 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
