'Matter of Grave Concern, High-level Committee Probing': Om Birla on Parl Security Breach
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that there is 'no association' between the Parliament security breach and the suspension of the MPs from Lok Sabha

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Saturday said that a high-level inquiry committee has been constituted for an in-depth investigation of the Parliament security breach.

In a letter to the Members of Parliament, the Lok Sabha Speaker expressed his grave concern over the incident and said the committee has started working and the report will be soon shared with the house.

“A high-level Inquiry Committee has been constituted for an in-depth investigation of the incident that took place inside the House. The Committee has started working. The report of this Committee will soon be shared with the House,” a statement from the Lok Sabha speaker said.

“In addition, I have also constituted a High Powered Committee which will review various aspects of security in the Parliament Complex and formulate a concrete action plan to ensure that such incidents do not recur,” the statement added.

On December 13 afternoon, two men jumped inside the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors’ gallery with canisters of yellow smoke. They were pinned down by MPs who were in the House during the Zero Hour.

With protests by the opposition disrupting Parliament proceedings, Birla wrote a letter to all MPs, informing that he had constituted a “high-powered committee” to review all aspects of security in the Parliament complex and formulate a concrete action plan to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

Om Birla further said that he discussed with leaders from all parties on how to strengthen the security arrangements and added that some of the suggestions have been implemented immediately.

“On the same day, I discussed with the leaders of all parties as to how we can further strengthen the security arrangements in Parliament. Some of the important suggestions made during the meeting have been implemented immediately,” the letter read.

This committee is in addition to a CRPF director general headed panel which is investigating the incident. The speaker said he will share its report with the House once it is submitted.

The Delhi Police on Saturday arrested one more person in connection with Parliament Security Breach case, an officer said on Saturday. Mahesh Kumawat was taken into custody today for allegedly helping the ‘mastermind’ Lalit Jha escape from Delhi.

Birla also said that there is “no association” between the Parliament security breach and the suspension of the MPs from Lok Sabha.

“It is indeed unfortunate that some Members and political parties are linking the decision of the House to suspend some members from the service of the House to the incident which occurred on December 13, 2023. This is unwarranted,” the Speaker said in his statement.
