Lucknow: Senior BJP leaders Kesri Nath Tripathi and Lalji Tandon were detained on Tuesday in different places while they were proceeding towards the riot-hit Gorakhpur.
While state BJP chief Tripathi was arrested near Allahabad, Opposition leader Tandon was detained at Barabanki near the state capital, the police said.
The two leaders were not allowed to visit Gorakhpur due to security issues, the police added.
Tripathi, who was detained on the Allahabad-Pratapgarh highway in Soraon as a preventive measure and was released later, Senior Superintendent of Police (allahabad) B D Palson said.
Tripathi along with former minister and MLA Narendra Kumar Singh Gaur and other activists blocked traffic on the highway in protest against the Mulayam Singh Yadav government's alleged attempts to "appease one community while hurting the sentiments of another".
Protesters indulged in rampant violence on Monday torching several vehicles and attempting to set a train on fire prompting clamping of curfew in some areas in Gorakhpur as tension gripped parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh after a local BJP MP's arrest.
