Lucknow: Four days after the Supreme Court gave the Narendra Modi government a clean chit in the Rafale fighter jet deal, Congress workers in Agra shouted slogans of ‘Chowkidar chor hai’ holding placards inside the Taj Mahal on Monday, surpassing the strict security system in the country’s most popular tourist spot. The police detained all of the Congress workers soon after their protest.
Earlier on Sunday, Uttar Pradesh minister Sidharth Nath Singh had called Congress president Rahul Gandhi a “chor” (thief). He said, “Chowkidar imaandar hai, par Rahul Gandhi chor hai (the watchman is honest, but Rahul Gandhi is the thief).”
Reacting to Singh’s remark, the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) said it did not just condemn the statement but would also take legal action against the minister for using derogatory language against their party president.
Speaking to News18, Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi said, “The kind of language and attack against the president of a national party by someone sitting at a constitutional post is showing the desperation of the BJP and its ministers. We demand strict action against Singh by PM Modi and will take legal action against him."
On the other hand, Modi during his Sunday’s rally in Congress bastion Raebareli, attacked UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s Italian origins and said, “There is no Quattrocchi or Christian Michel ‘mama’ in the BJP government's defence deals.”
The Supreme Court on Friday had said there was no occasion to doubt the decision-making process in the procurement of 36 Rafale jets from France, and dismissed all the petitions seeking an investigation into alleged irregularities in the Rs 58,000 crore deal.
