CPI-M sticks to stand, but tones down threat to Govt
The CPI-M softened its tone though Karat continued to warn the Govt.

New Delhi: Left Front's key constituent, the CPI-M, on Thursday stuck to its stand on the nuclear deal issue, but appeared to have softened its tone in the ongoing face-off with the UPA as hectic efforts continued to de-escalate the crisis and defer a possible snap poll.

The CPI-M said there was no danger to the UPA Government as long as the nuclear deal is not operationalised. The party, in fact, made it clear that it does not want the current nuclear crisis to affect the government.

At the same time, party politburo member Prakash Karat, however, warned the government against going ahead with the civil nuclear agreement. "It is contingent upon the government to not proceed further with the civil nuclear deal with the US," Karat told journalists after a meeting of the CPI-M Central Committee.

The Central Committee of the party earlier in the day fully authorised the politburo to take whatever steps necessary to see that the nuclear agreement with the US is not operationalised.

Asked what step the party is going to take if the deal is implemented, Karat cryptically said: "If the government operationalises the nuclear agreement, then its future lies with the government."

Asked what are the options before his party, Karat only said, "We will discuss that when they operationalise the Agreement."

When journalists pressed him for a more direct reply, Karat still avoided uttering any threats. "If we do not support, how will this government go on?" he asked.

Asked to react to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's comments, saying "if winter is there, can spring be far behind", Karat said, "I hope there will be no nuclear fission and there is a long nuclear winter."

What's your reaction?
