Not only for former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav, who is the incumbent MP and Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate from the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat, but the third round of the ongoing general elections to be held on May 7 would also be a “testing phase” for the couple’s daughter Aditi. The 21-year-old pursuing a degree in politics and international relations from University College London (UCL), England, is in India on a two-month sabbatical and campaigning extensively in the urban and rural pockets of Mainpuri seeking votes for her mother.
“I am fortunate enough to be among you all. The SP has always fought for the rights of the farmers and downtrodden. Hence, I appeal to the people of Mainpuri to extend their support, blessings, and vote for the SP this May 7,” said Aditi at a Chunavi Chaupal in Mainpuri.
People from the constituency, which is part of the so-called “Yadav land”, call this election a special one. The entry of one of the youngest members of the Yadav clan into the political arena has spiced up the poll battle.
“This is the first time people saw Aditi, who resembles her father, Akhilesh, from such close quarters. The way Aditi meets people, listens to them, embraces them, and interacts with them, reminds us of Dharti Putra Netaji (Akhilesh’s father late CM Mulayam Singh Yadav), who was known for his simplicity and down-to-earth approach,” said Badrinath Yadav, a resident of Mainpuri’s Fatehganj town.
Other than meeting people and canvassing, Aditi was also spotted trying her hand on a chaff cutter, spending time with children and adults in rural areas. “Mainpuri is Netaji’s own seat and to us, Aditi is ‘ghar ki bitiya’ (own daughter), people will certainly vote for Dimple Yadav and will make her win with a record margin of 4 lakh votes,” another local said.
Campaigning in the scorching summers of UP is not easy for anyone. Some of her team members while sharing her daily routine said that like any senior politician, Aditi leaves home early in the morning. While campaigning she makes sure that she remains hydrated. Initially, she used to accompany her mother Dimple in the Chunavi Chaupals. But of late she has started going to these public meetings on her own. She sticks to the day plan and makes sure that she meets a large section of people, especially youths and women, during a day of campaigning.
“Aditi is not only campaigning for me but in a way also exploring her roots. She is meeting people, visiting their houses, and spending time with them,” Dimple Yadav said in a statement.
On the possibility of Aditi joining politics in the future, the Mainpuri MP said she is free to choose her vocation. “I have always supported my children and it’s totally up to her if she wants to build her career in politics or something else,” she added.
