New Delhi: Reactions were mixed after Smriti Irani was shifted out of the HRD ministry, with some celebrating her "demotion" while others saying she was moved with an eye on the Uttar Pradesh polls.
Student leader Kanhaiya Kumar, who emerged on the national scene by taking on Irani over the Rohith Vemula suicide and JNU campus protests described her move to the Textiles ministry as a "golden exit".
The ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh called it a "mid-course correction" by PM Modi. The Congress ridiculed it as a "transfer of non-performing asset from one place to another".
The BJP said it was neither a demotion nor a promotion. Her successor Prakash Javadekar said Irani did good work as HRD minister.
Here's who said what on Smriti Irani:
Kanhaiya Kumar, JNUSU president: This is a kind of golden exit. Cabinet reshuffle is not a justice for Rohith Vemula. The new HRD minister Javadekar said he will continue the work done by Irani. So we aren't very much hopeful that the new minister will listen to our voice, the voice of students and youth in this country. The change in ministry is not justice for Rohith Vemula and all incidents in the last few months. They have saffronised educational institutions and attacked the autonomy of universities. This is just an election game plan. We students also have a stake in upcoming UP elections.
Tom Vadakkan, Congress Spokesperson: It is just like transferring a non-performing asset from one place to another. Serves no purpose.
Pavan K Verma, JDU Spokesperson: HRD minister's movement is a good step. She was a misfit and the changes are being made without improvement in governance.
Madhukar Jaitley, SP MLC: Midway through his government's term, Prime Minister Modi has realised his mistake. And is now trying to do some course correction by removing Smriti Irani from the HRD Ministry. Smriti Irani had been an injustice to the department.
Prakash Javadekar, New HRD Minister: Smriti Irani has done well as HRD minister. We will continue her good work.
