New Delhi: While the AIADMK and the Left parties accused the government on Wednesday of not doing anything for the Tamils in Sri Lanka, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said the government was committed to bringing justice to Lankan Tamils. During the debate on Sri Lankan war crimes in the Rajya Sabha, Khurshid said, "I reiterate the commitment of government to see the end of hostilities in Sri Lanka."
Khurshid also said India raises the issue with Sri Lanka in every meeting. "In every meeting with Sri Lanka, we have raised that it is important that accountability be maintained from inside. We want a prosperous and united Sri Lanka," Khurshid said amidst noisy scenes in the Rajya Sabha.
"We want a sustainable settlement to issues in Sri Lanka in a manner satisfactory with people who are still suffering," Khurshid added.
The government came under fire from the AIADMK over war crimes committed by the Sri Lankan government in the last days of the crusade against the LTTE in 2009. The AIADMK's V Maitreyan lashed out at the government for not doing anything for the people of Tamil origin living in Lanka.
"The UPA doesn't understand the ethnic conflict. It is blindfolded by the Lankan President. The Lankan constitution discriminates against minority Tamils," Maitreyan said.
CPI leader D Raja also lashed out at the government for colluding with the Rajapakse government on structural genocide of the Tamils. External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said the government has provided maximum humanitarian assistance. "It is a matter of our consideration, concern and a matter of humanitarian nature. I want to share with the House that we have provided assistance to end the pain the agony in Sri Lanka, we have provided maximum humanitarian assistance," Khurshid said in the House.
The issue of war crimes committed by the Lankan government was re-ignited after pictures of Prabhakaran's son before he was killed by the country's army were made public.
