National leaders reacted to wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s “unfortunate” disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024 and strongly blamed the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the same. NCP leader Praful Patel slammed the IOC over Vinesh’s disqualification for failing to make the weight on the morning of her 50 kg gold medal and stressed that regulations must be taken care of prior to the competition.

“Once you enter the competition and reach all the way to the finals and then get disqualified with this excuse, is not acceptable,” Patel said.

Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Paris Olympics after she could not make the weight on the morning of her 50 kg gold medal bout on Wednesday.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hoped that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) would “strongly challenge this decision and provide justice to the daughter of the country”.

“It is unfortunate that Vinesh Phogat, India’s pride, who reached the finals after defeating world champion wrestlers, was disqualified on technical grounds. We have full hope that the Indian Olympic Association will strongly challenge this decision and provide justice to the daughter of the country. Vinesh is not one to give up, we are confident that she will come back stronger in the arena. You have always made the country proud Vinesh. Even today the whole country stands with you as your strength,” Gandhi wrote in an X post.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also took to the microblogging site X and said this misfortune is merely an exception in Vinesh’s trailblazing career”.

“Vinesh Phogat’s setback in the Olympics has certainly broken the hopes of millions of Indians. She has a brilliant sporting career, shining with the glory of defeating the world champion. This misfortune is merely an exception in her trailblazing career, from which I am sure she will bounce back to be the winner she always is. Our best wishes and support are always with her,” Shah said.

Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary said the Indian government is prioritising the matter and the whole nation stands with Vinesh Phogat.

“We are deeply saddened. She has worked really hard to reach there… the whole nation is with her. The Government of India is giving priority to it and PM Modi has taken cognizance of it and whatever appeal process is there will be done,” he said.

Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram said, “I hope that the Indian Olympic contingent will explore all the possibilities of appeal and redressal whichever is permitted as per the protocols of Olympics. It’s unfortunate that she is disqualified.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Indian Olympics Association (IOA) president PT Usha about wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024 and asked her to explore the full range of options to help Vinesh’s case, sources said.
