New Delhi: While there have been many instances of vitriolic and hate speeches during the election campaign, a statement by Lok Janshakti Party's Munger candidate Veena Devi forced even her political opponents to smile.
During a street meeting in Munger in Bihar on Monday, Veena Devi, the wife of strongman Surajbhan Singh who cannot contest following his conviction in a murder case, told her supporters that she had warned her husband to ditch LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan if he does not tie up with the Bharatiya Janata Party or else she would divorce him and join the saffron party.
"There is a Narendra Modi wave in the country. I told my husband that LJP should enter into an alliance with the BJP. If the LJP fails to do so, I will divorce you and join the BJP," she told a group of supporters, a majority of whom were women. The crowd burst into laughter after Veena Devi's statement.
A Janata Dal United leader and his supporters canvassing for party candidate Rajeev Ranjan Singh alias Lallan Singh in the same area, too, laughed at Veena Devi's statement. "This is election time. But such a comment from a candidate that too about her husband should be taken in a jest," the JDU leader said.
