Newly elected BJP MP from Chikkaballapur in Karnataka, K Sudhakar drew flak after a video of a truckload of liquor being distributed to the public at an event in Nelamangala surfaced on social media.

The said event was reported to be jointly organised by BJP-JD(S) at Nelamangala to thank the voters for electing K Sudhakar to power from Chikkaballapur constituency in the recently concluded Loksabha polls. Over 50,000 people attended the event.

Around 150 cases of Beer, 50 cases of Whiskey and packets of hard liquor along with non-vegetarian food were reportedly served to people gathered at the event.

The videos of liquor being served at the venue where few people were seen passed out went viral on social media. The programme also saw the presence of opposition leader R Ashok, BJP MLA Dheeraj Muniraju and other leaders.

Bengaluru Rural SP CK Baba noted that the excise department gave permission for the event and the police were instructed to take care of the arrangements. “There is no fault of the police department in this, it is the responsibility of the excise department for providing the permission,” Baba said.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Dk Shivakumar hit out at the BJP following the incident seeking an answer from the party’s national president JP Nadda on the issue.

“I want the BJP National President JP Nadda to answer this. I don’t want any local leaders to answer, I want Nadda to reply to this. First, let their party answer to this,” Shivakumar said.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Dr K Sudhakar distanced himself from the distribution of liquor at the event. He said he had gone to attend the felicitation program organised by the BJP and the JD(S) and was not aware of liquor being served.

“I don’t know about this. BJP-JDS workers had organised a programme to felicitate me and opposition leader Ashok. They had organised the programme. We attended the programme and came out, what happened after that I’ve learnt about it from the media. I don’t know if the organisers did it or whether those who came there consumed it, but if our party or JDS party workers have done it, it’s wrong,” said the MP.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundurao took to microblogging site X to question the BJP MP over the act and asked if this is the culture of the BJP to serve people liquor at large scale.

“While the state is dengue-stricken the BJP leaders are busy distributing liquor. Is this your culture?” Rao wrote in an X post.
