New Delhi: Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi has called off his rally in Saharanpur after party leader Imran Masood was arrested on the intervening night of March 28 and 29 from Saharanpur for making hate speeches against Bharatiya Janata Party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
In the video that had gone viral, the Saharanpur Congress candidate had threatened to kill Modi claiming that he will chop the Gujarat Chief Minister into pieces.
Masood was also seen saying that Uttar Pradesh is not Gujarat, claiming that there is only 4 per cent Muslim population in Gujarat while the Muslim population in UP is 22 per cent.
The Congress had condemned Masood's statement. "I condemn the use of such language. This is a very unpleasant situation, where such words were used to threaten an anarchist," said Congress leader Raj Babbar.
Soon after the video surfaced, the Election Commission had sought details of Masood's speech. The SDM was asked to submit the video of the speech and a case was registered against Masood.
However, Masood remained defiant and said that he will apologise only if Modi apologises for the 2002 Gujarat riots. He also defended his statement saying, "By saying I will cut Modi to pieces, I meant I will teach him a lesson," adding that he made the statement eight months ago when he was a member of the Samajwadi Party.
