New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha on Friday discussed Section 66 of the IT Act which has come under fire over the past few weeks after several people were arrested on charges of posting "offensive" content online.
The most prominent of the cases related to the arrests of two girls from Palghar, Mumbai, one of whom had questioned the shutdown in the city after the death of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray. The other girl had merely liked the comment. A complaint was filed by an alleged Shiv Sena member following which the girls were arrested. Huge criticism followed and the two girls were released later.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, Parliament debated the SC/ST quota bill, and on Friday, around 18 lakh government employees in Kanpur and Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, went on a flash strike over the proposed bill that seeks to introduce reservation in promotions in government jobs.
The bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha amidst high drama as the continuing uproar by Samajwadi Party MPs forced the Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien to evict two of them, following which the party staged a walkout.
The bill was introduced afterwards and the Opposition BJP proposed some changes. Voting on the bill will take place in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
BSP supremo Mayawati has been keen on the bill and been demanding its passage. A day after rebuking the RS Chairman Hamid Ansari on Wednesday over the delay and the constant disruptions in the House, the ex-Uttar Pradesh chief minister expressed confidence in the Chair and urged the House members to rise above politics and ensure the passing of the bill.
