New Delhi: To the glee perhaps of the ruling BJP, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday one village each under Model Village Scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently.

While Sonia adopted Uruva village in Rae Bareilly, Rahul adopted Jagdishpur village in Amethi. Rae Bareilly and Amethi are Lok Sabha constituencies of Sonia and Rahul respectively.

The Congress tried to defend the decision of the top Congress leaders. While confirming the reports, sources within the Congress said that adopting a scheme did not mean endorsing it. They said that this is not an endorsement of NDA government. Earlier too when the UPA was in power, all MPs had adopted NREGA and Rajiv Awas Yojana, the sources said.

An ambitious village development project was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi under which each MP is supposed to take the responsibility of developing physical and institutional infrastructure in three villages by 2019.
