SP Supports BSP's Demand For Elections Through Secret Ballot, Says BJP Did Not Sweep UP Civic Polls
“The BJP has only won in those places in the urban local body polls where EVMs were used. They lost where voters exercised their franchise using secret ballots,” SP general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav said in a press conference in Delhi.

New Delhi: The Samajwadi Party has come out in support of Bahujan Samaj Party’s demand that general elections in 2019 be held through secret ballot and not Electronic Voting Machines or EVMs.

“The BJP has only won in those places in the urban local body polls where EVMs were used. They lost where voters exercised their franchise using secret ballots,” SP general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav said in a press conference in Delhi.

“I am not questioning the Election Commission of India but there are others who are part of election procedure on the day of voting. This time again, complaints were made by contestants that people from their family voted for them but that was not counted. Votes have been transferred. Machines have been tampered,” Yadav added.

Accusing the ruling party of misinterpreting the results for political gains in poll-bound Gujarat, Yadav claimed that BJP did not do well in seats being held by prominent party leaders.

BJP won 14 mayor seats out of 16 in the recently held local body polls.

“But we are forgetting the results at tier 2 and tier 3 levels. The BJP performed very badly in elections of nagar panchayats and palika parishads. Both the bodies cover a vast area and the losses there say a lot about BJP’s performance.” Yadav said.

In the elections for the post of palika parishad president, BJP won 68 out of 198 seats. In nagar panchayat president elections, BJP won only 100 of 438 seats.

SP also accused the central government of delaying and shortening the Winter Session of the Parliament.

“This was deliberately done to avoid any session during the election season. They wanted to avoid any question that would have made them uncomfortable,” he said.
