Three Jayas: The heroines of Indian politics
Three Jayas: The heroines of Indian politics
When it comes to netagiri, heroines reign supreme.

New Delhi: It pays to be a hero in films but when it comes to netagiri, heroines reign supreme! While southern stars NT Rama Rao and M G Ramachandran made a big splash in politics, Bollywood's leading men have a poor report card in the political arena.

Govinda: was elected as a Congress MP from North Mumbai in 2004 but is known to be missing in action not only in the Lok Sabha but from his constituency as well.

Raj Babbar: was a Samajwadi MP from Agra thrice, that's before he got suspended from the party for criticizing Amar Singh. He joined Congress in 2008 but has certainly not regained his lost glory

Rajesh Khanna: was a Congress MP from 1991-1996. He is presently politically inactive.

Dilip Kumar: was a Member of Rajya Sabha from 2000-2006 on a Congress ticket, but owing to bad health Dilip saheb didn't participate actively in Parliament sessions.

Dharmendra: was Elected MP in 2004 from Bikaner representing the Bhartiya Janata Party. Low attendance and poor performance, marred garam Dharam's political track record.

Sunil Dutt: was a member of the Congress party since 1984, and is probably the only actor to be remembered fondly in politics. Dutt was the Cabinet Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports from 2004-2005 in the Manmohan Singh Government. His untimely death in 2005 cut short his political career.

But the heroines have scripted a different story. Welcome to the world of the power puff girls led by the three Jayas: Jayalalithaa, Jaya Prada and Jaya Bhaduri.

Jayalalithaa, leader of AIADMK, has had two stints as Tamil Nadu's chief minister. Also, the first woman to be elected Leader of the opposition in 1989, she might have never played a mother onscreen but she sure is Amma for millions down south.

After teething troubles with the Telugu Desam Party leader Chandrababu Naidu, Jaya Prada switched to Samajwadi Party is now all set to contest for a second time from the Rampur Constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

Her fellow member of the Samajwadi party, Jaya Bachchan has fared comparatively better than her better half Amitabh Bachchan in politics. Big B had a short lived three year stint as a Congress MP but Jaya has been the member of the Rajya Sabha since 2006 and is known for her fiery outbursts.

And adding to oodles of glamour to the Bhartiya Janata Party is Dream Girl Hema Malini. The actress has a higher attendance than her husband Dharmendra at Rajya Sabha sessions and also has a squeaky clean image. She is known to speak her mind which sometimes gets controversial.

What's your reaction?
