New Delhi: There are now reports of a split in the United National Progressive Alliance or the Third Front over the Presidential elections.
The Telugu Desam Party, the INLD and the Samajwadi Party have decided to abstain from voting in the presidential elections, sources told CNN-IBN.
The three parties have reportedly conveyed their decision to NDA leaders.
The AIADMK and the AGP, on the other hand, are in favour of putting up a separate Third Front candidate.
Last week, the Third Front had decided to call their alliance the United National Progressive Alliance and wanted the incumbent President A P J Kalam to contest in the Presidential elections.
The UNPA allies tried to coax a reluctant President though Kalam had made it clear that he was not interested if there was no political consensus on the issue.
Following that, on Friday, President Kalam announced he would not run for a second term in office “in the current scenario” because he did not want the Rashtrapati Bhavan to become involved in a political process.
