New Delhi: BJP candidate from Sultanpur Varun Gandhi, who was once arrested in a hate speech case, has appealed for harmony between Hindu and Muslims saying the time has come for a new brand of politics. "I appeal for a new kind of politics this election season. As a BJP leader I appeal for brotherhood between Hindus and Muslims. If the VHP wants to burn our effigies for saying this, so be it," said Varun.

Meanwhile, a case of giving inflammatory speech at a public meet was registered against Varun at Barkhera police station on March 4, 2009. He was arrested on March 28.

The 29-year-old politician was charged with provisions under the stringent NSA the next day as his arrest came amid violence by his supporters who also clashed with police.

The 34-year-old leader is a sitting MP from Pilibhit, but has shifted base to Sultanpur. His mother Maneka Gandhi is contesting from Pilibhit.
