New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke as a true politician on Monday, saying the "future of Punjab will change if the Congress government is voted to power for the second time in the state."
The PM said it was due to the untiring efforts of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh that the state was again marching on the road of development. "A lot still needs to be done," he said. He was addressing a public rally at Amritsar ahead of the February 13 Assembly elections in the state.
Dr Singh said the "time has come" when the state should push for another green revolution and take up diversification of crops and provide the farmers with an opportunity by giving improved variety of seeds and techniques.
He said if the state has to get rid of poverty and unemployment, industrialisation would have to be given a push. He promised accelerated development of Punjab and said a Congress government was needed in the state to take it on the path of progress and prosperity.
The Prime Minister asked the people to vote for the Congress, saying the Centre would work hand-in-hand with the state to improve growth in all sectors.
Speaking in Punjabi in a speech lasting over 20 minutes, the Prime Minister immediately struck a chord with the people by going down the memory lane and recalling the days he spent in the holy city.
"I spent my youth here and my personal connection with Amritsar, you all know it better," he said and talked about Amritsar's unique place in India's freedom struggle and the place, which Jallianwala Bagh holds in history.
Creating a pitch for Congress nominee Surinder Singla, who is pitted against BJP nominee Navjot Singh Sidhu in the Amritsar Lok Sabha byelections, the Prime Minister praised Surinder Singla for his role as Punjab's finance minister for improving the state of affairs.
