Because the app runs natively on your desktop, you'll have support for native desktop notifications.

WhatsApp, the world's most popular messaging service, is expanding ways in which its billion plus users can access its service.

More than a year after introducing WhatsApp Web, that allows users to read and send messages from a desktop browser, the Facebook-owned company has announced the launch of its first desktop apps.

The new WhatsApp desktop apps are now available for Windows (Windows 8 and above) and Mac OS (version 10.9 and above) computers. You can download the Windows version and Mac versions of the WhatsApp app from here.

"Because the app runs natively on your desktop, you'll have support for native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more," says WhatsApp in a blog post.

The desktop app functions quite similar to WhatsApp Web. Users can open the the app and scan the QR code using the WhatsApp app on their phone. Quite like WhatsApp Web, the desktop apps will need an active internet connection also on the phone to function.

What's your reaction?
