On one side, we often hear cautionary tales of people blindly following Google Maps, leading them into unfortunate mishaps. Yet, there exists a compelling flip side to this narrative, illuminated by a recent incident that showcased the GPS’s ‘superheroic’ capabilities. In this particular case, it unveiled how a man utilised the location-sharing feature in Google Maps to pursue and apprehend the thief responsible for pilfering his father’s mobile phone.
Taking to ‘X,’ the individual named Raj Bhagat P shared a detailed account, writing, “My father was travelling from Nagercoil to Trichy in sleper class in Nagercoil – Kacheguda express. He had boarded at 1:43 AM from NCJ. The train was relatively empty & another person who boarded along with my dad stole my dad’s bag and mobile phone from him, and deboarded the train in Tirunelveli Junction.” The son (the OP) received a distressing call from his father’s friend at around 3:50 a.m., informing him of the theft. Fortunately, the family had the location sharing option enabled among immediate members, allowing Raj Bhagat to track the mobile’s movement.

Analysing the location, he deduced that the thief was heading back to Nagercoil on another train.

Taking prompt action, Raj Bhagat and a friend sought assistance from the police station. Believing the information, the police accompanied them to the railway station, anticipating the thief’s arrival. Spotting the thief there, they briefly lost him in the crowd. Raj Bhagat shared, “Based on his movements, I found that he exited through the main gate and took a local bus which connects Nagercoil railway station with Anna bus stand and Vadasery Christopher bus stand. So we started our chase in (by) bike.”
I called my close friend Babin who is also a local DMK (@arivalayam) functionary to help me recover this. And we both went to Nagercoil station to catch the theif. Their pursuit led them to the Anna bus stand, where they confronted the thief with the help of bystanders, successfully recovering the stolen phone and bag. Accompanying the post was a blurred image of the captured thief.
I assured my friend that the location was right and though we were steps behind him, he would come to a halt where we can nab him which he did in Anna bus stand. There after 2-3 minutes, Google maps gave me a location which was accurate to 2 metres! At that point I was standing… pic.twitter.com/dfudwjflhY— Raj Bhagat P #Mapper4Life (@rajbhagatt) February 4, 2024
Yet, the narrative took an unexpected turn, introducing a bizarre element that left even the OP chuckling with amusement.
Take a Look:
We thought we had recovered whatever he had (believing that he disposed others). But when local police came and interrogated him, they found the remaining items and I honestly don’t know where he kept all those things (cell phone charger, Bluetooth earphones, lock key & train… pic.twitter.com/LVPRl0Vi7Q— Raj Bhagat P #Mapper4Life (@rajbhagatt) February 4, 2024
Concluding on a positive note, Raj Bhagat emphasised how Google Maps played the hero in this caper, aiding him in chasing down the thief who forgot to disable the location-sharing feature post-robbery. “Many of you might not like sharing location, understandable but today it helped me.”
I was lucky that the thief didn’t turn off the phone through the entire thing, I was lucky that he had to pass through Nagercoil which was my backyard, & I was lucky that I knew something about maps & how to navigateMany of you might not like sharing location, understandable… pic.twitter.com/rmLFjhJKPG
