Hyderabad Maid Loses Job Because She Couldn’t Speak Hindi, Internet Can’t Believe It
The person said although the maid understood the language his flatmates remained adamant about replacing her at all costs.

A Hyderabad resident has turned to Reddit to reveal a disturbing issue with his flatmates who were unhappy with their house help. The individual shared that his flatmates wanted to dismiss the maid simply because she couldn’t speak Hindi fluently. Although the maid understood the language his flatmates remained adamant about replacing her at all costs. The user, who could speak the maid’s language and tried to bridge the gap by translating, revealed that she was deeply upset when asked to leave. In his post, he also asked for advice from others who might have faced similar problems.

The user explained, “I live in a 3BHK with two other flatmates. Both of them can’t speak Telugu, they moved in 2 months ago into the flat. We have a Telugu-speaking maid who cleans well, better than most of the maids in our area. She’s been working in the flat from past 1.5 years. Now these guys want to replace her just for the sole reason she can’t speak Hindi and they can’t understand Telugu. It’s not like they can’t communicate to her at all. Maid understands Hindi and I will be there most of the times to translate.”

“Our maid aunty literally had tears in her eyes when I told they want to remove her because of this. I tried so hard for my maid’s right, one of the flatmates started treating her badly and the maid akka lost her patience left the place saying she can’t work where there is no respect. She said she can get a new place to work in a week’s time,” the Redditor added.

Many were quick to criticise his roommates and suggested that he either find new flatmates or move out.

Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “Your roommates are being cheap. Letting go of a poor maid just because of language is so wrong. She is a localite, we came from other states, we should be the one learning Telugu. Your roommates don’t have any empathy towards poor people.”

Another shared, “It is really awful of people who come to another city and expect everyone to speak Hindi. I’m from Delhi but I never felt bad if my colleagues talked among themselves in Kannada. I would ask them to teach me their language. They were happy to teach.”

“Replacing a maid due to language is the last thing I will do. I am wondering do they have a real job,” a comment read.

An individual suggested, “Stand your ground and stand up for her. It’s not her fault for not knowing a language that is not her own. Blast at your friends for being immature.”

One more added, “If your roommates can’t learn basic Telugu to deal with your maid, change your roommates not your maid. And don’t want Hyderabad to have the language conflict like Bengaluru.”

Sharing an update in the comments, the Reddit user mentioned that their current maid is paid 3500 for her services. His flatmates have found a new maid who speaks both Hindi and Telugu and have decided to hire her. The new maid is asking for 4000, and the roommates are willing to pay her the higher amount. However, the Reddit user feels uncomfortable this decision and disagrees with them.
