Two Indians, a sound engineer and a newly married woman, were among the five people who died when a fire broke out in a thirty nine-storey residential tower with 750 apartments in UAE’s Sharjah’s Al Nahda area last week. The fire broke out in the residential tower on Thursday killing five and injuring 44 others.
The identities of the deceased Indians were confirmed by family friends, and social workers while speaking to UAE-based newspaper The Khaleej Times.
Michael Sathyadass, a sound engineer from India, was one of the two Indian victims who died in the fire. Sathyadass was working as a sound engineer at DXB Live in Dubai World Trade Center (DWTC) and played a crucial role behind the scenes during concerts where artists like Bruno Mars and AR Rahman performed, news agency India Today said, citing his brother.
The other victim is a woman from Mumbai who recently got married, in the month of February.
The second Indian victim was a 29-year-old woman from Mumbai who had just got married in February.
“They got married in February in Madinah. After their wedding, they moved in together to live in the building in Al Nahda where the tragic incident occurred,” the deceased woman’s friend was quoted as saying by the UAE-based newspaper.
The newspaper said the woman’s husband is in a critical condition at the hospital. “His condition is very critical… We are all praying for him,” the friend said.
The Indian consulate extended their support to the families of those who died and to those who were injured.
Authorities continue to investigate what led to the fire. Initial probe suggests that the fire broke out in the electrical transformers on floors 18 and 26.
A man of African descent jumped from one of the upper floors and fell to his death. “We saw an African man lying on the ground, he apparently jumped from the upper floors and died instantly,” an Egyptian couple living in the apartment said.
