CHICAGO: A mother has been charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of her 5-year-old daughter on Chicago’s West Side over the weekend, police said Monday.
Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said at a news briefing that police believe 27-year-old Simone Austin cut Serenity Arrington’s throat Saturday at their home in East Garfield Park, then carried her out to the street where she placed the girl on he ground and lay down next to her until firefighters arrived.
The child was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where she died a short time later.
Austin has been charged with first-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
Brown said the motive for the slaying remains unclear and that Austin has refused to talk to detectives. Police had been called to the home in the past after receiving calls that Austin had been the victim of domestic violence, he said.
