Pakistan hangs 11 convicts in one day; Rights group ask for moratorium
Pakistan hanged 11 death row prisoners on Tuesday before a temporary moratorium on execution kicks in during the month of Ramzan. The total number of executions since December have reached 150 when the self imposed ban was lifted.

Lahore: Eleven murder convicts were hanged in jails across Pakistan on Tuesday, two days before a temporary ban on executions begins during the holy month of Ramadan.

One prisoner was hanged to death in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail. He was sentenced to death for killing a man in 2014 over an old feud. Three convicts imprisoned were hanged in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. They killed more than one person in 1990 over a long-standing rivalry. Two convicts were hanged in Faisalabad's Central Jail. A prisoner, accused of raping and killing a 12-year-old girl in 1999, was hanged in Gujranwala Central Jail. Another death-row convict jailed for the murder of three in 1999, was hanged in Sialkot District Jail. Two murder convicts were hanged in Bahawalpur Jail. One murderer was hanged in Jhelum and Dera Ghazi Khan jails respectively for killing close relatives over a dispute.

With the 11 executions, the total number of prisoners executed in Pakistan crossed 150 after the government lifted the self imposed ban on death penalty in December after the terrorist attack at the Army Public School in Peshawar, which claimed 150 lives, mostly children.

On June 13, the government imposed a temporary ban on executions during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan. The UN, the EU, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch and various local groups have asked government to stop the executions. But government has refused to halt them, saying it is a deterrence against militancy and other crimes.
