Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi on Tuesday were indicted in the toshkhana case filed against them by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
The decision was announced during a hearing conducted in Adiala jail, where the former prime minister is currently incarcerated in the case, according to reports by Pakistani news agency Geo News.
The indictment comes a day after the court deferred the indictment of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) founder and his wife after Bushra Bibi failed to appear before the court.
As per reports by Geo News, Imran Khan was represented by his lawyers, Latif Khosa and Umair Niazi. Khan has filed an appeal challenging his disqualification in the toshkhana case. According to reports, the case will be heard by a panel headed by Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan comprising Justice Shams Mehmood, Justice Shahid Karim, Justice Shehram Sarwar Chaudhry and Justice Jawad Hassan on January 12.
Toshkhana Case
In August 2022, the current government led by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) filed a case against Imran Khan alleging that he failed to reveal complete information about gifts presented to him during his tenure as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022 and later sold these gifts for $635,000.
In August 2023, Khan was arrested from his Lahore residence after the court declared him guilty of corrupt practices in recording and handling the state gifts. He was sentenced to three years in prison and imposed a fine of 100,000 Pakistani rupees on him for concealing details of Toshakhana gifts.
On December 21, 2023, the Islamabad High Court rejected the plea for suspension of the sentence and maintained his disqualification.
