Pompeo's remarks came as Iran faced mounting international pressure to allow a "credible" investigation into Wednesday's Boeing 737 crash, which several Western governments have blamed on an accidental missile strike.

American, British and Canadian officials say intelligence sources indicate that Iran shot down the plane, perhaps unintentionally, but this has been denied by Tehran.

Iran, which has denied the Boeing 737-800 was downed by a missile, said it could take one or two months to extract information from flight data recorders. If it needed help, it said it could ask Russia, Canada, France or Ukraine.
