In a relief to devotees who intend to visit Mata Vaishno Devi, the Katra Railway station is being transformed into an Inter-Modal station so that passengers who arrive here can directly board buses, autos, taxis or even helicopters to reach the famous shrine.
Usually passengers face a lot of inconvenience and confusion after they get off the train at Katra. They have to wander around to take a bus, taxi or helicopter. With this intermodal station, passengers can breathe a sigh of relief.
Earlier, an agreement was signed between the National Highway Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The work is going on under this agreement.
NHLML CEO Prakash Gaur said that an inter-modal station will be developed in about 27 acres of land along with Katra station. The entire work will be completed in two phases and its tender has been issued.
After giving the tender to the company, the work will commence within six months. There is a possibility work will start from next year.
In the first phase of construction of the inter-modal station, facilities will be developed on 16 acres of land. Public zone, bus terminus, helipad, shopping mall, passenger complex, passenger reservation counter, multi-level car parking, taxi stand, commercial complex and a four star hotel will be built here. The station will also mark the starting point of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway.
In the remaining 11 acres of land, commercial development will be carried out, which will be done in the second phase. Free on Board (FOB), waiting room, concourses, public facilities will be developed in this phase. This will give a boost to economic activities, as well as improve the social and economic status of the people living in Katra and in the surrounding areas.
