Bengaluru Woman Sues Apple After 'Accidentally' Spilling Coffee on Her MacBook, Loses Case
Bengaluru woman loses case against Apple India after she accidently spilled coffee on her MacBook Pro.

Who would’ve thought that a simple cup of coffee would cost a Bengaluru woman her MacBook Pro 13-inch laptop worth Rs. 1.74 lakh? For a 31-year-old woman who acquired the Apple device in January 2023, the nightmare unfolded when an accidental coffee spill on the keyboard caused the laptop to cease powering up, as reported by TOI.

Having initially invested Rs. 1,74,307 in the MacBook, along with an additional Rs. 22,900 for an AppleCare+ coverage plan promising unlimited incidents of accidental damage protection, she approached the store for repairs. To her dismay, the seller declined the repair, citing that liquid damage wasn’t entirely covered under AppleCare+.

Undeterred, on the 23rd of the same month, she took her grievance to the third additional district consumer disputes redressal commission, levelling accusations against Apple India Pvt Ltd, iCare Ample Technologies, and Imagine Store for engaging in unfair trade practices.

Regrettably, her efforts were in vain as the consumer forum ruled in favor of Apple India. The tech giant argued that unintentional damage caused by liquid spillage to internal parts wasn’t covered under AppleCare+. Furthermore, it came to light that despite pursuing legal action, she had independently contacted Apple’s authorised services and had the damaged laptop fixed on February 4, omitting this crucial detail in her complaint and subsequently failing to substantiate her claim.

Meanwhile, this incident isn’t the first to capture the attention of the Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Bengaluru. Previously, another Bengaluru woman had successfully won a case against IKEA over a Rs. 20 carry bag. The dispute arose when Sangeetha Bohra, who had visited IKEA Bengaluru in October 2022, contested a Rs. 20 charge for a carry bag with the company’s branding. Following a complaint to the Bengaluru Urban area’s consumer disputes redressal commission in March of the following year, the forum ruled in her favour on October 4, declaring IKEA guilty of “unfair trade” practices and mandating adequate compensation for the woman.
