Often while travelling in Indian Railways, one may have noticed littering on it. People drink their tea or coffee, eat their meals or biscuits and throw away these under the berth. In the AC compartment, the brown packaging of the bed roll also is littered around. Trying to keep your surroundings clean is something that has been taught to us as toddlers. The same is emphasised in school, college and office, but still, people refuse to adhere to such things. An incident took place in Agra Division, where the passengers learned the hard way to avoid littering.
The Indian Railways is running a campaign at many stations, especially in the Agra Division to keep the stations and the trains clean. Apart from this, passengers are being warned to not travel without tickets or authorisation or carry excess baggage without authorisation, or else they would have to face punishment and pay a hefty fine. An inspection was carried out where people were found hiding in the toilets of the train or hiding their luggage.
One passenger littered by throwing the chips and biscuit package after eating it. An investigation team reached there and the passenger was fined 10 times the price of the chips and biscuits worth Rs 10 each. Similarly, many other passengers were caught and fined for littering.
A fine of Rs 1,23,075 was collected for 304 passengers including Rs 2,400 for littering from 22 passengers. From 243 ticketless passengers, around Rs 1,02,945 was collected. A total of Rs 2,43,750 in fines was collected.
Such surprise checks and inspections are needed to ensure everyone is following the rules. Public Relations Officer, Ms Prashanti Srivastava shared that such checks are being conducted continuously in the Agra Division. Passengers have been urged to travel by carrying a proper ticket and booking more luggage than the prescribed limit. Also, everybody has been warned to not litter on the railway premises as it can lead to an imposition of a hefty fine.
