New Delhi: Despite opening with modest gains and trading in positive terrain for major part of the day the markets lose ground in late trading.
The markets slipped in red on account of heavy selling in scrips across sectors.
All the BSE sector indices closed in red. Among the major losers were scrips from banking, auto and pharma sector.
Sensex closed down 167.18 points or 1.18 per cent at 14021.31, and the Nifty down 56.20 points or 1.37 per cent at 4040. About 790 shares have advanced, 1784 shares declined, and 57 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 7,173.41 down 51 points or 0.7 per cent.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,804.48 down 72.7 points or 1.24 per cent.
The BSE FMCG Index lost 1 per cent at 1,848.27. Dabur India, HLL, Colgate, Shaw Wallace, Tata Tea closed in red.
The BSE Metal Index was down 0.8 per cent to close at 8,875.47. Sesa Goa, Sail, Jindal were among the losers.
The BSE Bankex was down 2.5 per cent at 6,998.97. Kotak, BOI, Allahabad Bank moved downwards.
The BSE Health Care Index was plunged 2 per cent at 3,708.72. Biocon, Ranbaxy Labs, Glenmark, Dr Reddys Labs, Sterling Bio, Wockhardt closed lower.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 0.9 per cent at 9,415.57. KEC Infrastructure, Lakshmi Machine, Bharat Elec, Siemens, Greaves Cotton ended lower.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,458.67 down 1.9 per cent. TVS, H Honda, Amtek were among the losers.
The BSE IT Index closed at 5,392.13 down 0.9 per cent. Wipro, Mphasis, Hexaware ended weak.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 6,611.68 down 0.5 per cent. GAIL, MRPL, ONGC ended in red.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 11,683.95 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 55,345.67 crore.
The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4,213.69 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 71243.31 crore.
