New Delhi: In a major relief to Anil Ambani, the Mayawati government of Uttar Pradesh has given a go-ahead to his 3,740 mega watt power project at Dadri in Uttar Pradesh.

The project that is situated in the Ghaziabad district has been given the environmental clearance by the Central government as well.

Minister for Energy Ramveer Upadhya said 40 per cent of the power generated by the company would be given to Uttar Pradesh. According to the agreement, the company would produce 3,740 Mega Watt of power, which could be expanded to 8000 Mega Watts.

The UP government had entered into an agreement with the company on 16 June 2004, according to which the company will make efforts to start production within seven years of the agreement.

Ambani’s ambitious Dadri power plant had hit a roadblock when UP chief Minister Mayawati under put it under scanner. Mayawati had asked the Centre to review it alongwith the group’s Special Economic Zone project in Noida.

The 3,740-MW gas-fired project is the first stage of what is expected to be the world's biggest gas-based power project (with a total capacity of 7,480 MW).

The project is already at an advanced stage and as per the plans of Reliance Energy, it will be commissioned by 2008-09.
