Mumbai: The markets closed in negative terrain, which were off the day's low as oil, auto, capital goods, FMCG and metal stocks witnessed huge selling pressure through the day.
The Sensex slipped below 13,000 mark in later part of the day but managed to close above 13000 mark. It fell 84.15 points or 0.64 per cent at 13,072.51.
The Nifty was down 21.45 points or 0.56 per cent at 3777.30.
The BSE Midcap and Small cap were down 1.19 per cent and 1.23 per cent at 5,497.18 and 6,455.58, respectively.
The markets breadth was negative, about 805 shares advanced, 1687 shares declined, and 54 shares remained unchanged.
Top losers were Hero Honda (-4.07 per cent), Bajaj Auto (-3.35 per cent), Reliance (-2.97 per cent), HDFC (-2.88 per cent), BPCL (-3.34 per cent) and Jet Airways (-3.16 per cent).
However, SBI (2.08 per cent), ICICI Bank (1.77 per cent), Infosys (1.12 per cent), Wipro (0.98 per cent) and Suzlon Energy (2.38 per cent) gained.
The cash segment of NSE and BSE recorded turnover at Rs 8,559.8 crore and Rs 4,320.93 crore. The F&O segment of NSE registered turnover at Rs 35,120.17 crore. The total turnover posted by both segment was at Rs 48,000.9 crore.
The BSE Oil & Gas Index underperformed other indices. It was down 1.99 per cent or 124.55 points at 6,141.06 as selling was seen in BPCL, Reliance, MRPL, IOC and Reliance Natural.
Auto stocks like TVS Motor, Amtek Auto, Hero Honda, Bajaj Auto, MRF and Exide Industries tripped. The BSE Auto Index fell 1.73 per cent to 5,255.24.
Metal stocks including Sesa Goa, Jindal Saw, Guj NRE Coke, Sterlite Ind and Welspun Guj also ended in red. The BSE Metal Index was down 1.30 per cent or 120.24 at 9,160.64.
The BSE FMCG Index was down 1.26 per cent at 2,052.13 as Shaw Wallace, Colgate, McDowell, Britannia and ITC witnessed selling pressure.
Capital goods stocks like Crompton Greaves, Alstom Projects, Thermax, BEML and HEG also tumbled. So the BSE Capital Goods Index lost 1.23 per cent at 8,676.15.
Aurobindo Pharma, Biocon, Nicholas Piramal, Dr Reddy's Labs and GSK Pharma slipped. The BSE Healthcare Index was down 0.61 per cent at 3,707.03.
The BSE Consumer Durables Index was the major loser of the day; it was down 3.66 per cent or 121.33 points at 3,198.04 amid selling in BPL, Titan Industries, Whirlpool, Mirc Electronic and Su-Raj Diamonds.
