In India, jewellery is an important part of the culture. Gold, silver and diamonds have a lot of significance, especially for women during festivals and weddings. Among all the jewellery, people often choose silver as an accessory. But it is equally important to keep it clean from time to time. It has been found that silver usually tarnishes over time due to chemical reactions. Now, there is a village named Villupuram in Tamil Nadu where silversmiths have revealed one of the best ways to protect silver jewellery from tarnishing.
Silver jewellery and utensils lose their lustre with time. It is the result of a chemical reaction between silver and sulphur in the air. Sometimes there are some stains on the chains due to the body temperature as well.
It is often suggested that silver jewellery should be brought from a proper store and polished. This is because silversmiths in these stores take proper measures while polishing them which can protect them from severe tarnishing. But some of the silversmiths have revealed ways to protect them.
According to the silversmiths of Villupuram, one important way to protect silver jewellery is by soaking it in well-fermented curd overnight and then washing it with a toothbrush in the morning. It has been found that this will remove the stains and the shine will remain intact. Apart from that, toothpaste can also be applied to silver. It has been found that this protects it from tarnishing. But some people believe that the stains appear again after 2-3 days.
Another way to remove the stains is to wash the silver jewellery with lemon juice. However, it has been advised that lemon juice should only be used in limited quantities as it can darken silver jewellery. It was also added that if these solutions cannot be used, people can just give their jewellery to the shops.
