New Zealand all-round Mitchell Santner grabbed a stunning catch during the ODI World Cup match to dismiss Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi on Wednesday. It was a game-changing moment in the thrilling clash as Santner’s one-handed catch put New Zealand on the top at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
It was the last ball of the 14th over, Lockie Ferguson banged it short and the southpaw tried to pull it but only managed to get an edge on it. Santner ran backwards, kept his eye on the ball and stretched his hand to grab the catch. Shahidi was dismissed for just 8 as the momentum shifted in New Zealand’s way who had the task of defending 289-run target.

Chasing the 289-run target, Afghanistan lost openers Rahmatullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran in quick succession with 27 runs on the scoreboard.
Earlier, Afghanistan skipper Shahidi won the toss and opted to bowl in the World Cup match against New Zealand in Chennai.
Afghanistan kept the same eleven that upset defending champions England in their third match in Delhi after losing the first two games.
Glenn Phillips, Tom Latham and Will Young scored half-centuries as New Zealand were let off by some sloppy Afghanistan fielding to score 288-6 in their World Cup match in Chennai on Wednesday.
Phillips hit 71 off 80 balls, Latham 68 off 74 and opener Young 54 off 64 balls to lift New Zealand from a precarious 110-4 after they were sent in to bat on a slow pitch.
Mark Chapman fired a rapid 25 off 12 balls with two fours and a six as New Zealand scored 62 runs in the last five overs.
Afghan bowlers strengthened their hold on the game when Azmatullah Omarzai struck twice in the 21st over to remove both set batters Rachin Ravindra (32) and Young.
Rashid Khan then dismissed the big-hitting Daryl Mitchell (1) but the Afghans were guilty of dropping several catches. Omarzai (2/46) and Naveen Ul Haq (2/48) picked two wickets each.
