Legendary Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar recently triggered a massive debate by claiming that the side will have to take part in the qualifiers to confirm their berth in the next edition of the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka. Well, Pakistan have succeeded in gaining direct qualification into the next T20 World Cup.
Now, let us take a look at how Pakistan qualified for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

As per the qualifying rules, 12 of the 20 teams will earn automatic qualifications. India and Sri Lanka, by virtue of being the hosts, are the first two sides to have gained direct entry into the 2026 T20 World Cup. Apart from India and Sri Lanka, teams that have reached the Super Eight of the ongoing T20 World Cup will also secure automatic qualification for the next edition.
According to this rule, the USA, Australia, Afghanistan, West Indies, South Africa, Bangladesh and England qualified for the 2026 T20 World Cup, apart from hosts India and Sri Lanka. The rest of the three teams for the 2026 T20 World Cup will be decided depending on the ICC Men’s T20I rankings table as of June 30, 2024.
Pakistan currently claim the seventh spot in the T20I rankings with 241 points. New Zealand occupy the sixth position with 247 points. Thus, New Zealand and Pakistan, along with Ireland (11th in T20I rankings), have earned direct qualification into the next T20 World Cup.
The remaining eight spots for the 2026 T20 World Cup will be determined via regional qualifiers tournaments. Three tournaments will determine sides that will feature in next year’s Europe Qualifier. Sub Regional Qualifiers will also be held across other ICC regions later this year, with their respective Regional Finals scheduled to take place in 2025.
The ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup will come to an end on June 29. The Super Eight of the tournament will start tomorrow with South Africa set to take on the co-hosts USA.
