'If I Can Say Something to Dravid It Would Be...': Ex-BCCI President's Advice to India's Head Coach on Handling Big-Game Pressure
Looking at India's struggles during the big games, the former BCCI President has given some words of wisdom to Rahul Dravid as India eye the title in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

With India’s march for silverware set to begin soon as the T20 World Cup 2024 starts on June 2, questions will continue to float around the Indian team led by Rohit Sharma and whether he will be able to lead the side to glory after missing out in the final hurdle in multiple competitions including the ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship. But Sourav Ganguly has suggested the Indian head coach, Rahul Dravid some simple advice to help them get past the massive barrier.

Speaking in an interview with Revsportz, the former Indian captain maintained his stance on how Dravid is one of the best cricketers to take part in the sport and has the IQ to understand the sport. Still, he pointed out that one aspect that can be changed is the amount of pressure seen among some family members joining the cricketers during the ICC tournaments.

If I can say something to Rahul (Dravid) and, make no mistake, he is a champion cricketer and cricket brain, it will be to relax a little,” said the former BCCI President.

Ganguly took examples of the wives of the current Indian captain, Rohit Sharma along with Virat Kohli who are shown prominently on the live broadcast seeing taking up a lot of pressure and feels that it might not be the right approach.

The current mentor for the Delhi Capitals commented, “When I see Rohit’s wife in the stands, it is evident how much pressure she is under. When I see Virat’s wife, I see the kind of pressure she is feeling. We in India make the mistake of pushing too much”.

Instead, having a more relaxed approach, especially in the big games would serve the Indian team in good stead and allow them to play with absolute freedom which could take them over the line. Ganguly took the example of India’s 2003 World Cup Final when making his point.

” I think back to the 2003 [World Cup] final, for example. If anything, we need to relax when we are playing the big games. Just play with freedom,” he concluded.

Most recently, India suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup finals in Ahmedabad. The Men in Blue were in the best form of their lives, going in undefeated till the final hurdle where they fell short. Rohit Sharma and his men will look to overcome that mental barrier in the upcoming T20 showpiece event.
