Joe Root Creates History, Becomes 1st Batter In The World To…
Root, who is the all-time leading run scorer in World Test Championship (WTC) history, scored 87 runs in the first innings of the ongoing third Test against the West Indies.

Star English batter Joe Root created history on Saturday (July 27) by becoming the first cricketer in the world to score 1000 runs in three World Test Championship (WTC) cycles. The right-handed batter, who scored 87 runs from 124 balls in the first innings of the ongoing third Test between England and the West Indies in Birmingham, has 1023 runs to his name in 13 Tests played so far in the 2023–25 WTC cycle.

Only two batters have managed to score more than 1000 runs in WTC 2023–25. Star Indian opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made his Test debut last year against the West Indies in July, sits at the No. 1 position with 1028 runs to his name in 16 innings of nine matches played so far.

Root, who is the all-time leading run scorer in WTC history, amassed a total of 1660 runs in 20 matches of the 2019–21 WTC cycle and scored 1915 runs in 22 matches played during the 2021–23 cycle.

Root overtakes Lara

By scoring 87 runs in the first innings of the third Test, former England Test captain Root, who is in red-hot form these days, moved past former West Indies cricketer Brian Lara’s tally of 11,953 runs to become the seventh leading run scorer in Test cricket’s history. He has 12,027 runs to his name in 261 innings of 143 Tests played so far.

By crossing the 12,000-run mark on Saturday, Root also became the fastest English batter to achieve the milestone. He broke former captain Alastair Cook’s record. Cook, who finished his Test career in 2018 with 12,472 runs, needed 275 innings.

Sachin is leading run scorer

Legendary Sachin Tendulkar tops the list of batters with the most runs in Test cricket’s history. During his 24-year-long career, Tendulkar played 200 Tests for India and scored 15,921 runs. He is followed by Australia’s Ricky Ponting, South Africa’s Jacques Kallis, India’s Rahul Dravid, Cook, and Sangakkara.
